Amnesty International Kenya has announced the appointment of George Morara as its new Executive Director, effective 2 June 2026, following an open competitive recruitment process launched in February.

Morara brings what the organisation describes as three decades of experience in governance, public accountability, and human rights advocacy. He previously served as Vice-Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, among other leadership roles in public service and civil society. The Board said his track record reflects sustained engagement in constitutionalism, transparency, and civic participation.

The organisation also paid tribute to outgoing Executive Director Irüngü Houghton, acknowledging his eight-year tenure. Under his leadership, the office transitioned from a branch of the International Secretariat into a membership-driven national entity governed by a Kenyan board. During his term, the organisation expanded its advocacy on police accountability, civic space protection, and socio-economic rights, while maintaining engagement with government, diplomatic, and civil society stakeholders.

In the statement signed by Board Chair Dr. Stellah Wairimu Bosire, the organisation expressed confidence that Morara’s leadership will guide its next phase of work at a time of evolving human rights challenges in Kenya and the wider East African region.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to working with communities and partners to promote accountability, protect freedoms, and advance human dignity.
