Annabel Jane Sutherland is an Australian professional cricketer known as a dynamic all-rounder who bats right-handed and bowls right-arm medium-fast.
Born on 12 October 2001 in East Melbourne, Victoria, she has emerged as one of the standout talents in the women’s game.
The daughter of James Sutherland, the former chief executive of Cricket Australia and a one-time domestic cricketer, and Heidi Sutherland, Annabel grew up immersed in a highly sporting household in Melbourne.
She attended Methodist Ladies’ College and also played Australian rules football in her younger years before fully committing to cricket.
Siblings
Annabel is the middle child of three siblings in a competitive and supportive family.
Her elder brother, Will Sutherland (born 27 October 1999), is a professional all-rounder who captains Victoria in domestic cricket, plays for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League, and has represented Australia in One-Day Internationals.
The siblings, only about two years apart, share a deep connection through the sport, having honed their skills in fierce backyard battles where Will was often the dominant older brother.
In 2024 they became the first brother-sister pair to represent Australia in 42 years.
Her younger brother, Tom Sutherland, has shown considerable sporting ability and is regarded by Annabel as potentially the most skilled cricketer in the family, though he has pursued golf instead.

Career
Annabel’s professional journey began remarkably early.
At just 15 she made her Women’s Big Bash League debut for the Melbourne Renegades in the 2016–17 season, becoming the youngest player to feature in the competition at the time.
She soon switched to the Melbourne Stars, where she has since established herself as a core player and later took on captaincy duties.
Domestically she has also represented Victoria in the Women’s National Cricket League.
Her international career launched in 2020 with a T20I debut against England, followed by an ODI debut against New Zealand later that year and a Test debut against India in 2021.
She has featured in multiple World Cup-winning Australian sides and has played franchise cricket overseas, including stints with Welsh Fire in The Hundred, Gujarat Giants and later Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League, and Northern Superchargers.
Known for her powerful middle-order batting and useful seam bowling, she has produced landmark performances such as a Test double-century and significant contributions in Ashes series.

Annabel was part of Australia’s victorious squads at the 2020 T20 World Cup, the 2022 ODI World Cup, and the 2023 T20 World Cup, and she contributed to the gold-medal-winning team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
In Tests she scored an unbeaten 137 against England in 2023, a historic 210 against South Africa in 2024 that stood as the fastest double-century in women’s Test history and the second-highest score by an Australian woman, and 163 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the 2025 Ashes – the first century by a woman in a Test at the venue.
She has earned multiple international centuries across formats, ICC Women’s Player of the Month awards, and the prestigious Belinda Clark Award as Australia’s women’s cricketer of the year.
