South Korea has banned new downloads of China’s DeepSeek artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, according to the country’s personal data protection watchdog. The government agency said the AI model will become available again to South Korean users when “improvements and remedies” are made to ensure it complies with the country’s personal data protection laws. Ugandan opposition politician Kizza Besigye, who went on a hunger strike last week was rushed to hospital after his health deteriorated.  The 68-year-old was rushed to a private medical facility in a prison ambulance as health was deteriorating, his lawyer Erias Lukwago wrote earlier on Facebook. A long-time political opponent and critic of President Yoweri Museveni, Besigye has been in detention at a maximum security facility in the capital Kampala since November. The US State Department has dropped a statement from its website which stated that Washington does not support Taiwan’s independence – a move which has sparked anger in China.  China said the revision “sends a wrong… signal to separatist forces advocating for Taiwan independence”, and asked the US to “correct its mistakes”. The department’s fact sheet on Taiwan-US relations earlier included the phrase “we do not support Taiwan independence” – this was removed last week as part of what it said was a “routine” update. Electricity consumption hit a new record high with a peak demand of 2,316 MW recorded on Wednesday, February 12 2025. This demand is 12 MW higher than the previous peak of 2,304 MW recorded on 15 January 15, 2025. Statistics from Kenya Power’s National Control Centre show that peak electricity demand hos been steadily growing over the last three years with the growth rate gaining momentum in 2024. The National Chairman of the Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association (KEPSHA) Johnston Nzioka died in a road accident along Mombasa Road, Machakos County. Police said Nzioka succumbed to injuries after he was involved in a road crash in Athi River on Sunday February 16 afternoon. His four-wheel drive vehicle crashed into a moving trailer on the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway as he swerved to avoid a head on collision with an oncoming car. Police are hunting for gunmen who attacked a senior police officer and robbed him of his pistol in Limuru, Kiambu County. The inspector of police based at Limuru police station said he was on Sunday February 16 morning on his way to Ngarariga police station in a private car when he was attacked by three gunmen. Police are investigating the murder of a 68-year-old woman whose body was found in a tree plantation in Nambale, Busia County. The body of Elizabeth Shiambiani was found lying under a tree on the plantation. It was alleged that she left her house February 14 night for a burial vigil at her neighbour’s home before the incident happened. It was not until the following day her body was discovered. At least three people drowned in a river after a canoe they were using capsized in Holo area, Kisumu Count. Police said the incident happened on Saturday February 15 as a group was using a canoe to cross the Mugruk River. Police officers established that four people were crossing the river using a canoe and on reaching the middle of the river, strong winds were experienced and the canoe capsized. A male patient was found dead after suspected suicide in an isolated ward at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), Eldoret. Police said the body of Enock Kisuru, 48 was found hanging on a window grill after a suspected suicide on Saturday February 15 afternoon. He is said to have used his clothes to hang himself at an isolated male ward. The matter is under investigation and comes weeks after a patient went missing from his ward at the facility before his body was found on the riverbanks near there. President Donald Trump’s attempts to shrink the federal bureaucracy are heading to the Supreme Court, according to US media. He has filed an emergency appeal to the country’s highest court to rule on whether he can fire the leader of an independent whistleblowing agency. At least nine people have died over the weekend, as torrential downpours drenched parts of the south-eastern US, submerging roads and houses.  Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said eight people had died in his state and suggested at a news conference on Sunday that the total could go up. In a chilling turn of events, two women, a mother and her friend were arrested in connection with the tragic death of a four-year-old boy. More than 40 people, mostly women, were killed after an illegal gold mine collapsed in Mali on Saturday. The collapse took place near Kenieba, in Mali’s western, gold-rich Kayes region. The victims had climbed into open-pit areas left by industrial miners to look for scraps of gold when the earth around them caved in, a gold miner’s union leader told Reuters. This is Mali’s second deadly mining accident in three weeks, after at least 10 people were killed when a mining tunnel flooded late in January. Baringo Senator William Cheptumo is dead.  Cheptumo died at the Nairobi Hospital where he had been battling undisclosed illness. His family said he had been sick for some time until his death on February 16. He had been discharged from hospital last week but his condition deteriorated prompting his hospitalization again, a family member said. His body was moved to Lee Funeral Home.
