Police are investigating the discovery of the body of a 24-year-old woman under a culvert of a drainage outside Kileleshwa police station, Nairobi. A businessman who claimed she was standing outside the police station on January 11 noticed the body of Immaculate Atieno drowning into the culvert forming part of a tunnel along Mandera Road. She raised alarm and locals with police rushed to the rescue of the woman in vain. The body was later moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures. Kenyans will experience more pain for higher National Social Security Fund (NSSF) deductions starting February 2024. NSSF will hive off between Sh420 and Sh1,740 from workers’ pay-slips. New rates introduced say the lower earnings limit or the amount that is considered the lowest pensionable salary has been raised to Sh7,000 up from the current Sh6,000. This category of employees will now contribute Sh420 from the current Sh360. Grammy award-winning South African DJ and record producer Black Coffee is receiving treatment for injuries sustained during a flight, reportedly because of air turbulence. He was en route to a club performance in the Argentinian resort city of Mar Del Plata when the incident happened. Local media are reporting that the DJ was admitted to hospital. Black Coffee’s management team called the incident “severe” adding that it had “left him with some injuries”. Kenya has rejected some 110 travelers’ applications through the new Electronic Travelers Authorization (ETA).  They were part of more than 32,000 travelers’ applications made through the system. Of these, 25,000 were approved in the past weeks. This has enabled the immigration officials collect over USD1 million, Principal Secretary Julius Bitok revealed Thursday Some of the affected travelers who were rejected were on Interpol, other watchlists. “They were found to be in the watchlist, others have issues to do with terrorism, drug trafficking and other issues. Kenya’s former Assistant Minister for Internal Security in late President Mwai Kibaki’s government Stephen Tarus has been arrested in Uganda over gold smuggling. Tarus was on Wednesday remanded at Luzira Prison over falsification of export documents. He will remain behind bars until January 18, Justice Esther Asiimwe ruled. According to Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) officials, the former minister was detained following an investigation that uncovered his involvement in an illegal gold smuggling operation, leading to substantial financial losses for the Ugandan government. Alphabet’s Google said on Wednesday it is laying off hundreds of employees across multiple teams, with Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman also leaving the company, as the tech giant continues to cut costs. Uganda is set to chair the Global South Association of 120 countries after hosting the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Kampala in January 2024. President Yoweri Museveni will take over from Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev to lead the second-biggest group of countries after the United Nations. Uganda will chair the group from 2024 to 2026 and the summit is scheduled for January 15 to 20, officials said. At least 84 people died in separate accidents in the country in the first week of 2024. This is according to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) which said the incidents happened between January 1 to January 7. The statistics are an increase compared to 72 recorded during the same period in 2023. The toll is likely to increase after the latest accident on Tuesday January 9 claimed 15 lives along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway. Police are investigating the source of an explosive device that was found at the fence of a camp at Hagadera, Dadaab, Garissa County. A team at the Borehole Five Critical Infrastructure Police Unit Camp was returning there on January 9 when they stumbled on the FRG explosive on the fence. It was suspected to have been fired by terrorists during the previous probing of their camp. The unexploded FRG was safely kept and guarded awaiting the Bomb Disposal Unit from Dadaab for detonation. The driver of a 14-seater bus involved in a fatal road crash on the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway on Tuesday has been arrested. The grisly accident claimed 15 lives. According to NTSA, the driver is being held at the Mau Summit Police Station, awaiting arraignment on Thursday. The bus was involved in the crash at Twin Bridge, Mau Summit on Tuesday. The motive behind the murder of a first-year student at Machakos University remains a mystery. The body of Harriet Moraa was on January 9 found in a house belonging to her boyfriend after a suspected murder.
