US space agency Nasa will fast-track plans to build a nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030, according to US media. It is part of US ambitions to build a permanent base for humans to live on the lunar surface. According to Politico, the acting head of Nasa referred to similar plans by China and Russia and said those two countries “could potentially declare a keep-out zone” on the Moon. But questions remain about how realistic the goal and timeframe are, given recent and steep Nasa budget cuts, and some scientists are concerned that the plans are driven by geopolitical…

Texas governor Greg Abbott has threatened to file bribery charges against Democratic legislators who fled the state to prevent a vote on a controversial redistricting plan that would significantly favour Republicans. At least two-thirds of the 150-member state legislative body must be present to proceed with the vote. The quorum became unreachable when 51 Democratic lawmakers left the state. The proposed congressional map, unveiled last week by Texas Republicans, would create more Republican seats in the US House of Representatives where they hold a slim majority currently. Abbott warned that lawmakers who refuse to return to vote on the map…
South Africa is seeking new markets in Africa and Asia as it negotiates with the United States over looming 30-percent trade tariffs, which could cost around 30,000 jobs, officials said Monday. Government ministers expressed frustration with the United States over the tariff — among those due to take effect against several countries later this week — saying South African exports do not compete with US industry and were only a fraction of that country’s total imports. The 30-percent tariff is the highest in sub-Saharan Africa and comes as diplomatic relations between South Africa and the United States are in tatters…

KHRC said scrapping the programme is the only viable option for the Kenyan government, as reforming or re-engineering the Fund will not address the fundamental design, political, and legal flaws that have…
