Renowned actor and martial artist Chuck Norris has died at the age of 86, his family has confirmed.

In a statement released on Friday, the family said Norris passed away suddenly on Thursday morning while surrounded by loved ones.

“With heavy hearts, we share that he passed away peacefully with his family by his side,” the statement read, noting that the family would keep further details private.

They described Norris as a global symbol of strength and discipline, but also a devoted family man.

“To the world, he was a martial artist, actor and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and the heart of our family,” the family said.

They added that he lived a life guided by faith, purpose and commitment, inspiring millions around the world through his work and personal values.

Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, Norris rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most recognisable figures in action films and television. He joined the United States Air Force in 1958, where he discovered martial arts during his deployment in South Korea.

After returning to the United States, he built a successful career in martial arts, winning several championships and later opening karate schools. He also trained notable personalities, including Steve McQueen and Priscilla Presley.

Norris gained international recognition in 1972 after starring alongside Bruce Lee in Way of the Dragon, a performance that became iconic in martial arts cinema.

He went on to star in a number of successful action films before achieving widespread popularity on television with Walker, Texas Ranger, which aired from 1993 to 2001 and attracted a global audience.

Beyond entertainment, Norris ventured into business and philanthropy. He co-founded a bottled water company and supported several charitable initiatives, including youth programmes that promote discipline and confidence through martial arts.

His family expressed gratitude for the support he received from fans worldwide.

“The love and support he received from fans meant so much to him. To him, you were not just fans, you were his friends,” the statement said.

They also acknowledged recent reports about his hospitalisation and thanked well-wishers for their prayers and support.

“As we grieve this loss, we kindly ask for privacy during this time,” the family said.
