A court in Eldoret has detained murder suspect Naftali Kinuthia for 14 days to allow the police to complete investigations into the murder of medical student Ivy Wangeci.

The prosecution asked for more time to allow them to complete investigations as they had limited time when he was in hospital.

“He was admitted to hospital since the incident and we have not had time for him to complete recording his statement,” the prosecution said

Kinuthia’s lawyer Mbiu Kamau also asked for more time so that their client treated for the injuries he sustained after being attacked by a mob.

“He has complained of headache and chest pains and needs to be treated before he can be charged,” Kamau said.

The axe and the knife which he used for the murder were presented in court as evidence. Four people recorded statements regarding the murder.

His father George Kinuthia who was at the court room apologized to Ivy’s family. He said that his family was yet to get in touch with Ivy’s family but he had contacted the elders in order to find the way forward.

George Kinuthia revealed that the two families knew each other from Thika town where he lives and owns businesses.

Kinuthia, an employee of betting firm SportPesa, shot to the limelight on Tuesday after he killed Ms Wangechi.

Initial reports indicated the two were in a romantic relationship that had gone sour.

Ms wangeci is accused of cheating and infecting Kinuthia with HIV.

However, reports from close friends indicate the man was a childhood friend turned stalker, who kept pestering Wangeci with romantic approaches.

He is said to have sent Wangechi several gifts including a phone and money.

Detectives are yet to unravel the truth behind the killing.
