Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga has called for intensified inter-agency efforts to accelerate Kenya’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list.
Ingonga, who chaired a meeting of law enforcement and financial sector principals, said a coordinated whole-of-government approach was necessary to address outstanding deficiencies identified by FATF and demonstrate effective implementation of reforms.
The meeting reviewed Kenya’s progress following the face-to-face FATF Africa Joint Group meeting held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on September 11, 2026.
Officials assessed issues raised during the Abidjan engagement and reviewed interventions required to address the remaining action points under Kenya’s FATF action plan.
The DPP stressed the need for sustained collaboration among institutions responsible for combating money laundering, terrorism financing and other financial crimes.
The meeting also focused on strengthening the implementation of existing measures and ensuring that evidence of progress is properly documented and submitted through the relevant FATF processes.
Ingonga said Kenya’s efforts to exit the grey list required all relevant institutions to work together to address outstanding deficiencies and demonstrate that reforms were producing tangible results.
The meeting further agreed on strategic actions and timelines intended to maintain momentum generated during the Abidjan discussions and advance Kenya’s case for removal from increased monitoring.
Kenya was placed under FATF increased monitoring after the global financial crime watchdog identified strategic deficiencies in the country’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing framework.
Since then, the Government has undertaken legal, institutional and operational reforms aimed at strengthening the prevention, investigation and prosecution of financial crimes, as well as asset tracing and recovery.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has been involved in the reforms through the prosecution of money laundering and terrorism financing offences, asset forfeiture proceedings, development of prosecutorial guidelines and capacity building for prosecutors handling complex financial and economic crime cases.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has also reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying investigations into financial crimes, money laundering and terrorism financing.
The DCI Director said the agency would work closely with the Financial Reporting Centre, ODPP, Asset Recovery Agency and other partners to strengthen financial investigations and disrupt illicit financial networks.
“Kenya’s place on the FATF Grey List is a national challenge that demands results, not rhetoric,” the DCI Director said.
He said investigators would intensify efforts to trace illicit proceeds, improve the quality of financial intelligence and build stronger evidentiary files to support money-laundering prosecutions.
The DCI boss added that the agency would focus on investigations completed, cases taken to court and assets recovered as measurable indicators of progress.
The renewed push comes as Kenya seeks to demonstrate to FATF that its reforms are not only being enacted on paper but are being effectively implemented through investigations, prosecutions, convictions and recovery of proceeds of crime.
