A police officer was charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal accident involving a government vehicle in President William Ruto’s motorcade along Ngong Road in March this year.

It is alleged that on March 13, 2025, at approximately 12:30 PM, along Ngong Road near Adams Arcade in Nairobi County, Police Constable George Mwangi Maina, while driving a Toyota Prado bearing registration numbers GKB 790J/KCY 351H, operated the vehicle in a manner dangerous to other road users.

The vehicle struck a pedestrian, identified as 79-year-old British national Edgar Charles Frederick Riches, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Maina pleaded not guilty on June 5 and was released on a cash bail of Sh150,000.

The deceased was in Nairobi to visit relatives who are residents.

Police said then the car involved in the accident was that of the Regional Commissioner in Nairobi.

The car was identified and detained for probe, police spokesman Michael Muchiri said.

“The driver of government motor vehicle attached to Nairobi Regional Coordinator’s office is out on cash bail awaiting to be arraigned in court,” he said.

It was part of the president’s convoy and racing ahead when it hit and killed the man as he crossed at a zebra crossing oblivious of the oncoming vehicles.

The British High Commission in Nairobi was informed of the incident, police said.
The motorcade was racing towards Kibera as the president embarked on his fourth day of the tour of Nairobi when the accident happened March 13 2025.
Police and witnesses said the driver involved in the accident did not stop.
Other officers said this was not possible because of security reasons.

This is because the president’s car was behind few meters away.
The incident attracted a mob at the scene before police arrived to pick up the body to the mortuary.
Presidential cars usually move at high speed for among others security reasons.
