Farah Diba was born on October 14, 1938, in Tehran, Iran, to Captain Sohrab Diba and Farideh Ghotbi. Her father was an officer in the Imperial Iranian Armed Forces and a graduate of France’s St. Cyr Military Academy. Farah was deeply affected by her father’s death in 1948, at age ten, which forced the family to move from their villa to a shared apartment.

She attended Tehran’s Italian School, then the French Jeanne d’Arc School, followed by the Lycée Razi. Athletic from a young age, she captained her school’s basketball team. Later, she pursued architecture at the École Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris, studying under Albert Besson.

Marriage and Rise to Empress

Farah met Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi while studying in Paris. After a carefully managed courtship, they married on December 20, 1959. Initially, her role was primarily ceremonial, though after giving birth to a son in 1960, she became more active in state affairs, focusing on education, health, and cultural initiatives.

She built a reputation as a patron of the arts and a promoter of women’s education, founding Pahlavi University, the first American-style university in Iran.
