A businesswoman was shot and killed in a robbery incident in Migori Town.

The victim identified as Mary Mongare, 48 operated an Mpesa business in the town. She was shot three times in a robbery after she had closed her business on Thursday October 23, 2025 at about 9pm.

This is the latest such violent robbery to be reported in the area amid calls on local authorities to take action to tame the trend.

The woman was shot in the right ankle, left hand wrist and left side of the chin. She succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

Police said the woman had closed her shop after depositing Sh500,000 she had received from a customer.

She then boarded a motorcycle with her daughter headed home and on reaching the Sala area on the Migori-Kisii highway, they dropped off before walking to their house.

It was then that two assailants who had masked their faces ordered the two to surrender their valuables. The daughter, in panic, screamed for help as she ran away prompting the assailants to shoot.

They shot and hit her mother who fell down.

Police said the gunmen grabbed a bag the woman had which contained an Mpesa mobile phone and a flask before escaping on foot.

The woman was rushed to hospital where she died while being attended to, police said adding the body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

A hunt on the gang is ongoing, police said on Friday. Police say there is a gang terrorizing locals in the past months and efforts to trace them are ongoing .

Meanwhile, police in Isinya, Kajiado County are investigating an incident where a decomposed body of one Edward Mukira was found on a farm. The body had decomposed at the time of its discovery on Thursday by locals. The locals were drawn to the scene by a foul smell, police said.

The cause of the death was not immediately known and the body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
