Four students at the Maseno University in Kisumu were slashed and injured in a robbery incident outside their hostel, police said.

The four were on Monday, September 22, 2025, night attacked by men riding on a motorcycle and armed with pangas and left with serious cuts.

They were walking along Imani Hostel near the university when they were attacked, police said.

Police said two assailants armed with pangas and riding on a motorcycle attacked the four male students before robbing them of their mobile phones. They sustained head injuries.

Police said they are pursuing the attackers and that the four were admitted to the hospital in a stable condition.

A team of detectives was sent to the area on Tuesday to pursue the attackers, police said.

Some student leaders at the institution demanded action from authorities to address the case. They said there has been an increase in attacks by suspected thugs targeting the student community for valuables and cash.

Meanwhile, police in Turbo, Uasin Gishu County are investigating an incident where a suspect was lynched in a botched robbery.

The incident happened on Monday September 22 in Huruma area, police said.

Locals blocked police from accessing the scene as another group stoned the victim to death a few meters away. The suspect is said to have stolen two motorcycles in the area, police said.

They had also frog marched him to a place they claimed he had hidden the stolen motorcycles.

Police said the suspect was stoned to death and his body set on fire. The body was picked up and taken to the mortuary pending an autopsy after he was identified as Fredrick Temwa, 22.

Such cases of mob lynching have been on the rise amid efforts to address the menace.

Pundits say such incidents show a breakdown of law and order in some sections of the society.
