    Early Life

Born Aston George Taylor Jr. on August 5, 1968, in The Bronx, New York, Funkmaster Flex grew up in a Jamaican household. His father was a DJ and sound system professional, which inspired him to follow a similar path. By age 16, Flex was spinning records in New York nightclubs, building the foundation for his career in music.

    Career Breakthrough at Hot 97

Funkmaster Flex’s radio career began in the late 1980s when he worked with Chuck Chillout on WRKS 98.7 Kiss-FM. After moving between stations and clubs, his big break came in 1992, when he convinced Hot 97 to air live nightclub broadcasts featuring his DJ sets. The concept worked so well that he was given his own show, marking the launch of New York City’s first hip-hop radio program.

Flex’s energetic style, unique sound effects, and ear for talent quickly turned him into the station’s flagship host. His “Fire in the Booth”-style freestyles on Hot 97 became a testing ground for rappers, with artists ranging from Nas to Drake earning credibility by stepping into his studio. By the mid-1990s, Flex was releasing acclaimed mixtapes, forming The Flip Squad, and producing compilation albums that showcased stars such as Snoop Dogg, DMX, and Eminem.

    Entertainment and Media Ventures

Funkmaster Flex’s influence stretched beyond radio. He became a familiar face on “Yo! MTV Raps” in the 1990s and went on to host car culture shows like Ride with Funkmaster Flex, All Muscle with Funkmaster Flex, and Funk Flex Full Throttle. These programs cemented his reputation as both a hip-hop tastemaker and a custom car enthusiast.

He also built a presence in the video game industry, appearing in Def Jam Vendetta, NBA 2K18, NFL 2K5, and voicing a fictional radio host in Grand Theft Auto IV.

In 2010, he launched InFlexWeTrust.com, a digital platform for hip-hop freestyles, news, and car culture content. The site was later acquired by Complex Media, extending Flex’s reach into digital media.

    Rivalries and Controversies

Funkmaster Flex has never shied away from controversy. His rivalry with DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God at Power 105.1 became one of New York’s most heated radio feuds. In 2015, he drew backlash for promising to release a diss track and ghostwriting evidence involving Drake—promises that never materialized, sparking petitions to remove him from Hot 97.

He has also faced legal issues, including a 2011 arrest in connection with a domestic dispute, and publicized battles over child support.

    Departure from Hot 97

In August 2025, after more than three decades at Hot 97, Funkmaster Flex announced he was stepping down. His final show was scheduled for Labor Day weekend, marking the end of a historic 33-year run. While he didn’t share details about his next chapter, he hinted that his future moves would “shock” his fans.
