Gunmen engaged in a gunfight with police as they attacked a group of Samburu leaders while in a convoy in the area.

The group led by Samburu senator Steve Lelegwe, woman representative Pauline Lenguris, CEO of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referal Hospital Richard Lesiampe and the area Member of County Assembly Felix Lenamparasio was in a convoy from a funeral event in the area when they came under attack on Sunday March 23 morning.

They had visited Pura, Ikeek Sapuki and Kutari areas within the Malaso division to condole with the bereaved families following recent banditry attacks when they were attacked.

Police said while at Ikeek Sapuki headed back to Maralal their convoy was shot at by suspected gunmen who were waiting prompting an exchange of fire.

Police officers backed by the local National Police Reservists responded and managed to repulse the bandits.

No injuries were reported as the bandits escaped towards the Malaso valley.

In the Archers Post area, a gang shot and killed a 17-year-old boy after a robbery of livestock from Meru.

Police were tracking the animals when the gunmen opened fire to repulse them in Lalkarkar area.

The attackers managed to escape with unknown number of animals.

In Marigat, Baringo County, a herder was shot and seriously wounded in a robbery of livestock by bandits.

The gang managed to escape with about 100 heads of cattle.

The victim was rushed to a local hospital and admitted in serious condition.

The areas have been facing increased cases of banditry attacks amid efforts by the government to tame the trend.

Officials say that more personnel and resources have been sent to the area to address the menace.

The areas are part of those under Operation Maliza Uhalifu, which is targeting banditry.
