Two men were killed by a hippopotamus in an incident at Bumbe beach, Busia County.

Only one body was recovered after the incident, police said. The man was on a boat in the area with a colleague when the animal struck, forcing it to capsize on Monday, December 8, 2025.

The beach is part of Lake Victoria. The body of one Harry Bwire was retrieved hours later by a team of officials from the Kenya Coast Guard.

Police said the second body was yet to be found and efforts to retrieve it were ongoing.

The recovered body was handed over to the Ugandan authorities, officials said.

The recovery efforts were hampered by fears the animals may attack the team. They resumed the operations on Tuesday, police said.

Elsewhere in Serem, Vihiga County’s Sahani village, a man aged 45 was found dead on a footpath.

Police said the body had visible injuries when it was discovered on Monday afternoon. The injuries were on the stomach, neck, hands and head, police said.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

And police are investigating murder in an incident where a man was stoned to death ater being accused of beig a thief in Brooke area, Kericho County.

He was accused of stealing farm produce before being stoned to death by locals.

Police moved the body to the mortuary pending an investigation and autopsy. The police said mob lynching is criminal and they are investigating the incident.

Such cases have been on the rise in urban and rural areas amid campaigns to stop the trend. Police want suspects to be surrendered to authorities for processing and arraignment.

Police say some of the suspects are framed up and killed with a motive.

Several such cases are pending under probe in various places.
