Properly adjusted headlights are important for safe driving, especially at night or in poor weather conditions. Headlights that are aimed too high can blind other drivers, while headlights that point too low can reduce visibility. Learning how to adjust car headlights helps improve road safety and ensures your lights illuminate the road correctly.

      • Check the Headlight Condition
      • Park the Car on a Level Surface
      • Mark the Headlight Beam Height
      • Locate the Adjustment Screws
      • Adjust the Headlight Aim
      • Test the Headlights

      Check the Headlight Condition

Before adjusting your headlights, inspect them to make sure the problem is not caused by damaged or faulty parts.

Clean headlights and check that the bulbs are working properly.

    • Clean the headlight covers
    • Check for damaged bulbs
    • Ensure both headlights are functioning
    1. Park the Car on a Level Surface

Find a flat area facing a wall or garage door where you can measure the headlight beam.

The vehicle should be positioned correctly for accurate adjustment.

    • Park on level ground
    • Keep the car at the correct distance from the wall
    • Ensure the tyres are properly inflated
    1. Mark the Headlight Beam Height

Turn on the headlights and mark the centre points of the light beams on the wall.

This helps you compare the current position before making adjustments.

    • Measure the height of the headlight centres
    • Mark the beam position
    • Use tape or a marker for reference
    1. Locate the Adjustment Screws

Open the bonnet and find the headlight adjustment screws or knobs.

Most vehicles have controls for vertical and horizontal adjustment.

    • Check the headlight housing
    • Identify the adjustment points
    • Use the correct screwdriver or tool
    1. Adjust the Headlight Aim

Turn the adjustment screws slowly while checking the beam position on the wall.

The headlights should point slightly downward and remain aligned with each other.

    • Adjust vertical aim first
    • Adjust side-to-side alignment if needed
    • Make small changes gradually
    1. Test the Headlights

After adjusting, test the headlights while driving in a safe area.

Make sure the road is well lit and that other drivers are not being dazzled.

    • Check visibility at night
    • Confirm both beams are even
    • Re-adjust if necessary
