Connecting your smartphone to a printer can save time and let you print documents, photos, or emails directly without needing a computer. Whether you use an Android or iPhone, most modern printers support wireless printing, making the process quite simple. Here is how to connect phone to printer.
- Check That Your Printer Supports Wireless Printing
First, make sure your printer has wireless capability (Wi-Fi or Bluetooth). Many recent printers come with built-in Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, or Bluetooth, but older models might need a cable or adapter. Check your printer’s manual or settings to confirm.
- Connect the Printer to Wi-Fi
Ensure the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your phone:
- Use the printer’s control panel or touchscreen to navigate to the Wi-Fi settings.
- Select your home or office Wi-Fi network.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password.
- Wait for the printer to confirm connection (often shown by a Wi-Fi light or on-screen message).
If using Bluetooth, enable Bluetooth on the printer.
- Install the Printer App on Your Phone
Most printer brands (HP, Canon, Epson, Brother, etc.) offer free mobile apps:
- Go to the Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iPhone).
- Search for your printer’s app (e.g., HP Smart, Canon PRINT, Epson iPrint).
- Download and install the app.
- Open the app and follow the prompts to detect and add your printer.
- Connect the Phone to the Printer
Once the app is installed:
- Ensure your phone’s Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is turned on.
- Open the printer app and let it scan for available printers.
- Select your printer from the list.
- Follow any additional steps if prompted (such as entering a code or confirming on the printer’s screen).
- Start Printing
- Open the document, photo, or webpage you want to print on your phone.
- Tap the Share or Options button (usually shown as three dots or an arrow).
- Select Print.
- Choose the connected printer.
- Adjust print settings if needed (such as number of copies or color vs. black-and-white).
- Tap Print.
- Use Cloud Printing (If Needed)
If your printer supports Google Cloud Print (older Android systems) or AirPrint (iPhone), you might not need an extra app. Simply:
- For iPhone, open the file, tap Share > Print, and select the AirPrint-compatible printer.
- For Android, open the file, tap Print, and choose the Google Cloud Print or detected printer.
