Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Senior Assistant Director of Forensics Joshua Mutua has produced a certificate of digital evidence in the inquest into the death of Rex Kanyike Masai.

When the matter came up for hearing on Monday before Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo, Mutua who was recalled to the witness stand formally produced the certificate relating to a video recording he examined during investigations into Masai’s death.

Mutua told the court that on July 31, 2026, he received a silver-coloured 8GB flash disk containing a video recording for forensic examination.

His task was to review the footage and confirm its authenticity.

He testified that he examined the contents of the flash disk, confirmed it contained video footage and signed the exhibit memo relating to the digital evidence.

According to Mutua, the recording established visual continuity and was dated June 20, 2024, the day Rex Masai died.

He said the footage has a duration of one minute and 58 seconds and was reviewed to assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

His appearance on Monday was solely to produce the certificate of evidence, formally placing the authenticated digital recording before the court as part of the inquest proceedings.

Speaking after the hearing, lawyer Mwangi Chege, who represents the Masai family, said the court has now heard testimony from 30 witnesses.

Chege said the matter is expected to proceed to submissions, with the next court date set for September 24.

He added that the family continues to pray for justice for Rex Masai.

Rex Kanyike Masai was fatally shot during anti-government demonstrations in Nairobi on June 20, 2024.
