Naftali Njahi Kinuthia, the man who killed Ivy Wangechi, has revealed chilling details behind the gruesome murder.

Kinuthia, an employee of betting firm SportPesa, shot to the limelight on Tuesday after he cut Ms Wangechi – a Moi University student taking practicals at MTRH – with an axe.

In a Wednesday testimony to Eldoret East DCI boss, Ali Kingi, the man said frequent heartbreaks by the woman he loved led him to commit the crime.

Kinuthia disclosed to the officer that he had invested his money, time and feelings to the woman, who didn’t reciprocate the love.

In the recent incident, Kinuthia claimed he sent Ms Wangeci some money – to organize for a birthday party – but the lass went mum, prompting him to travel from Thika town to Eldoret to seek answers.

“The accused said he used to send the woman some money. The girl, according to the suspect, had told him that she was organizing her birthday party, which would happen soon. He said he sent her some money to arrange the event. Since then, the woman refused to pick his calls, said the suspect. That is what prompted him to travel [from Thika] to Eldoret. He said he wanted to know why she was ignoring him,” Eldoret East DCI boss Mr Kingi told a local media outlet.

After arriving at Eldoret, the woman refused to pick his calls. At some point, she switched off her phone.

Further, Kinuthia claimed he was a frequent visitor at Ms Wangechi’s residence in Eldoret.

The DCI officer noted: “He said it wasn’t his first time coming to Eldoret, and that he used to visit her often in the past. He said he visited her last Friday, and their meeting was brief. According to him, the girl told him that she was going to her residential place to take off her professional attire. She told him she would be back. However, upon reaching her residential place, the woman switched off her phone, effectively blocking her planned meeting with him.”

Upon learning that the Friday meeting was not going to happen the man decide to return to Nairobi.

While in Nairobi, he made attempts to contact Ms Wangechi, but she refused to pick his calls.

The move angered him, prompting him to make a second trip to Eldoret on Monday.

“Upon returning to Eldoret yesterday, the man said he felt despised by the woman when she refused to pick his calls. He said it got to a point where she switched off her phone. According to him, that angered him prompting him to look for an axe and kill the girl, ” the officer said.

Preliminary reports indicate the man bought the axe he used to kill Ms Wangechi with in Eldoret.

“From our sources, the suspect bought the axe and knife in Eldoret. They were sharpened in Eldoret. We’re yet to interrogate him further. Once he is stable, he will be taken to court,” said Mr Kingi.

Investigation into the killing are ongoing.
