    Siblings

Janine has one sibling, an older brother named Tim Gauntt.

Little public information is available about Tim, as he has maintained a private life outside the spotlight that Janine has occupied.

Raised together in Euless and Fort Worth, Texas, by their parents—Janice Loraine (née Agee), a real estate agent, and Turner Maurice Gauntt Jr., a United States Air Force veteran and Braniff International pilot—the siblings grew up in a supportive environment rooted in Texan values.

    Career

Turner’s career began in her teens when she left Texas for New York to model.

By 1980, she launched her acting career in Hollywood, landing early roles in the television series Dallas.

Throughout the 1980s, she appeared in shows like General Hospital (as Laura Templeton) and Another World, though she grew frustrated with the “cute and flighty” roles she was offered.

Seeking more substantial parts, she moved to New York to hone her craft, a decision that paid off when she was cast as Maggie O’Connell in Northern Exposure (1990–1995).

This role as a spirited Alaskan bush pilot became her defining performance, earning her critical acclaim and a loyal fanbase.

Beyond Northern Exposure, Turner starred in films like Cliffhanger (1993) opposite Sylvester Stallone, Steel Magnolias (1989), and Leave It to Beaver (1997) as June Cleaver.

She played Katie McCoy in Friday Night Lights (2008) and appeared in Solace (2015) with Anthony Hopkins.

Turner also ventured into producing and directing, notably with her award-winning short film Trip in a Summer Dress (2004).

She hosted The Janine Turner Show, a conservative talk radio program from 2011 to 2013, which won “Best Radio Show in Dallas.”

An accomplished author, Turner has written four books, including Holding Her Head High: Inspiration from 12 Single Mothers Who Championed Their Children and Changed History (2008) and A Little Bit Vulnerable: On Hollywood, God, Sobriety, & Politics.

In 2010, she co-founded Constituting America, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to educating Americans about the U.S. Constitution.

    Accolades

In 1993, Turner was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Northern Exposure.

She received three consecutive Golden Globe nominations (1992–1994) for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama for her role as Maggie O’Connell.

Her talk show, The Janine Turner Show, was honored with the award for “Best Radio Show in Dallas” during its run.

Turner won Best New Director at the Deep Ellum and Beverly Hills Film Festivals for Trip in a Summer Dress (2004).

Named one of People Magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” and Esquire Magazine’s “Women We Love” during her Northern Exposure tenure, she was also appointed to the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation in 2006.
