Juelz Santana is an American rapper born LaRon Louis James on February 18, 1982, in New York City.
Raised in the Sugar Hill neighborhood of Harlem, he grew up in a household influenced by African American heritage, with additional cultural touches from a live-in Dominican godmother and an Afro-Dominican paternal grandmother who played significant roles in his early life.
He began rapping at the young age of five, drawing inspiration from his surroundings in one of New York’s iconic hip-hop epicenters.
Siblings
Juelz has an older brother named Jermaine “Twin” James.
Twin has served as his manager and has occasionally spoken publicly on his behalf, such as confirming updates on music projects.
Career
Santana’s career took off in the late 1990s and early 2000s as a key member of the influential hip-hop group The Diplomats, also known as Dipset, alongside Cam’ron, Jim Jones, and others.
He first gained widespread recognition through featured appearances on Cam’ron’s 2002 hits “Oh Boy” and “Hey Ma,” both of which reached high positions on the Billboard Hot 100.

This exposure led to his solo debut album, From Me to U, released in 2003 under Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam, featuring tracks like “Dipset (Santana’s Town)” and “Down.”
His second album, What the Game’s Been Missing! (2005), included the popular single “There It Go (The Whistle Song),” which peaked at number six on the Hot 100.
Throughout his career, he has collaborated on major tracks, including Chris Brown’s “Run It!” (a number-one hit), contributions to Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III, and features with artists like Lloyd Banks and Jim Jones.
He has also been part of spin-off efforts like Skull Gang and maintained ties to Dipset, though the group has been described as now-defunct.
Despite plans for additional albums like Born to Lose, Built to Win, some projects have remained unreleased, and his output has been more sporadic in later years.
Accolades
Santana received a nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 2003 for his work on “Oh Boy” with Cam’ron.
Another nomination came for “Dipset (Santana’s Town)” in a similar category.
His contributions as a featured artist on Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III earned him a nomination for Album of the Year at the 2009 Grammy Awards.
Several of his singles and albums have achieved certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), including platinum status for “There It Go (The Whistle Song)” and triple platinum for “Run It!” as a featured artist.
