National carrier Kenya Airways has appointed Habil Waswani as Acting Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer following the resignation of Captain George Kamal.
Waswani, who currently serves as Kenya Airways Company Secretary and Director of Legal Services and Regulatory Compliance, will assume the position on September 15, 2026.
Kamal resigned from the position citing personal reasons but will remain with the airline for a 30-day transition period before his formal departure on September 30, 2026.
The leadership change comes as Kenya Airways continues implementing a turnaround strategy focused on improving operational reliability, restoring sustainable financial performance and achieving its long-term growth ambitions.
The airline’s board said it had already begun a competitive recruitment process to identify a substantive Group Managing Director and CEO.
Waswani will therefore serve in an acting capacity until the recruitment process is completed.
The board said the search for Kamal’s successor would be conducted competitively and is expected to be completed in the near future.
Kamal assumed the role of Acting Group Managing Director and CEO on December 16, 2025, after serving as Kenya Airways’ Chief Operating Officer for three years.
During his tenure as COO, Kamal was credited with helping stabilise the airline’s operations before taking over its executive leadership.
He subsequently led the executive team in implementing the carrier’s turnaround strategy.
Kenya Airways said Kamal also successfully guided the company through its previous leadership transition.
“Captain Kamal served with commitment, dedication, honour and diligence,” the airline said in the notice announcing his resignation.
The carrier thanked him for his service and wished him well following his decision to leave the airline.
Waswani has worked at Kenya Airways for more than five years and currently oversees the airline’s legal and regulatory compliance functions.
He has 24 years of experience in corporate and commercial legal practice.
