A Kenya Power contractor died after an electricity pole fell on him while replacement works were underway in Imenti Central Sub-County, Meru County.

The deceased, Geoffrey Mugambi Savouring, was part of a team replacing old and rotten wooden electricity poles at Kathiranga Village in Katheri West Location on Thursday afternoon.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. when one of the poles accidentally fell, striking the worker and causing serious injuries.

He was rushed to Githongo Sub-County Hospital in critical condition before being referred to Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialised treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries while being transferred to the referral facility.

The incident was reported by a contractor attached to Kenya Power’s Meru branch.

Police officers visited the scene and launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the workplace accident.

The body was moved to the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

And a 26-year-old casual labourer was killed after a basement slab collapsed at a construction site in Mombasa’s central business district on Thursday evening.

The deceased, identified as Eliud Biwott, was working at the China Site Mall construction project along Haile Selassie Road, off Digo Road, when the accident occurred at around 6:00 p.m.

According to a report made by the site’s foreman, workers had reported for duty at around 8:30 a.m. and were carrying out manual excavation on the building’s basement when the slab suddenly gave way.

Biwott was trapped beneath the collapsed concrete slab and sustained severe crush injuries. He died at the scene before he could be rescued.

A team of police officers visited the scene. Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers from the Coast Region processed and documented the site before the body was retrieved from the debris.

The body was moved to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal construction site collapse, including whether safety regulations were followed.
