Kenya reiterated its pledge to uphold and protect the rights of its citizens in line with the Constitution and the rule of law.
Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen gave the assurance Wednesday during talks with the European Union Special Representative for Human Rights, Kajsa Ollongren. He emphasized that the government remains committed to safeguarding fundamental freedoms and ensuring that the rights of all Kenyans are respected.
The meeting explored ways of deepening cooperation between Kenya and the European Union in advancing human rights, strengthening democratic governance and enhancing strategic partnerships, particularly in the security sector.
Murkomen outlined various government initiatives aimed at fostering citizen participation, entrenching a strong democratic culture, preserving judicial independence, reinforcing oversight institutions and supporting an active civil society.
Discussions also touched on reforms and modernization efforts within the National Police Service (NPS), which are designed to improve accountability, efficiency and professionalism.
The CS commended the EU for its continued support in capacity building and the digitization of Kenya’s criminal justice system. The engagement followed closely after Kenya signed a training Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in Geneva.
Ollongren congratulated Kenya on its election to the United Nations Human Rights Council, noting that the position enhances the country’s influence in promoting human rights, regional stability and security.
She was accompanied by EU Ambassador to Kenya Henriette Geiger and other officials. Also present were Principal Administrative Secretaries Beverly Opwora (National Administration) and Jacob Narengo (Internal Security), Secretary for National Administration Thomas Saka, Independent Policing Oversight Authority Commissioner Dr Annette Mbogoh, and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Police Service.
