The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced a vacancy for the position of Commissioner General following the exit of Humphrey Wattanga.

In a notice issued on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the authority said it is seeking to recruit a Commissioner General who will also serve as the Chief Executive Officer and lead the institution through its ongoing transformation.

KRA said the Commissioner General will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the authority, managing its funds and property, and providing overall leadership to staff. The successful candidate will also ensure the organisation operates in line with its vision of being “an agile tax and customs revenue agency facilitating voluntary compliance for all.”

The position also serves as the Accounting Officer of the authority and is a member of the KRA Board.

According to the notice, applicants must be Kenyan citizens and hold at least a first degree from a recognised university. A master’s degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Law or a related field will be required.

Candidates are also expected to have a minimum of 15 years of work experience, with at least 10 years at a senior leadership level in large public or private institutions. Demonstrated compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, and the Leadership and Integrity Act is mandatory. Knowledge of fiscal and tax policy and administration will be an added advantage.

KRA said the successful candidate will be offered a three-year contract, renewable once based on performance, along with an attractive and competitive remuneration package.

The vacancy comes after Wattanga was nominated as Kenya’s High Commissioner to South Africa following his departure from the authority earlier this month.

Following his exit, Lillian Nyawira Nyawanda, the Commissioner for Customs and Border Control, was appointed Acting Commissioner General pending the recruitment of a substantive office holder.
