There is political heat within Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party as a result of internal strife.

John Mbadi, the party chairman, recently threatened to resign. The former Suba South MP said he was prepared to step down after being demoted from minority leader in the National Assembly.

After the August polls, the nominated MP was replaced by Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi.

Some ODM Party members have accused the nominated MP of undermining the party leader by failing to show up for Azimio anti-government rallies.

Speaking on Monday, ODM party leader Raila Odinga said he was not privy to Mbadi’s resignation.

The former prime minister told Ramogi FM that he was party elections will be held this year and those looking to leave should simply do so.

“I have not heard anything that John Mbadi wants to resign. Party elections will be done this year. Those who want to leave should simply leave,” said Raila.

He added: “When Mbadi wants to leave he will tell me. When someone is angry, he can react the way he did, I doubt if this is what Mbadi wants.”

Last week, Mbadi said his party leader was aware of his intention to leave the national chairman post.

“I am not a person to run away from the office before we get good succession, I want to be succeeded, and still I will serve the party in whatever capacity. You know some people think being a chair is something I am dying for, far from the truth, I have done my bit,” he said.

The legislator claimed he was being forced out by a few members who have been working to undermine his leadership.

In a quick rejoinder, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino said he was ready to take over from Mbadi who has served as chair for nine years.

“We wish you well Hon. John Mbadi as you step down from ODM Party Chairmanship. It is now my time to take over from where you have left off and steer the Party to greater heights and prosperity. YOUTH POWER,” he tweeted.

His utterances were backed by Narok senator Ledama Olekina.
