    Lil Jon, born Jonathan H. Smith on January 17, 1971, in Atlanta, Georgia, is a renowned American rapper, record producer, and DJ widely recognized as the “King of Crunk.”

    He pioneered the crunk genre, a high-energy style of Southern hip-hop characterized by aggressive beats, repetitive chants, and party anthems.

    Lil Jon rose to prominence in the early 2000s with his signature energetic delivery, often featuring shouts like “Yeah!”, “What!”, and “Okay!”, which became cultural staples in music and beyond.

    Lil Jon has two siblings, namely Chris Smith and Willie Smith.

    Their father worked as an aerospace engineer with prior military service, while his mother pursued a career in military medicine.

    Career

    Lil Jon’s career began in the 1990s when he formed the group Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz alongside Big Sam and Lil Bo.

    They released several albums, including Get Crunk, Who U Wit: Da Album in 1997, which helped establish crunk as a dominant sound in the South.

    The group’s breakthrough came with hits like “Get Low” featuring the Ying Yang Twins in 2003, which became a massive club anthem and peaked high on the charts.

    As a producer, Lil Jon crafted chart-topping tracks for artists such as Usher’s “Yeah!” (featuring Ludacris), Ciara’s “Goodies,” and Petey Pablo’s “Freek-a-Leek.”

    He later pursued solo work, releasing his debut album Crunk Rock in 2010, and continued collaborating on electronic and hip-hop projects, including the 2013 hit “Turn Down for What” with DJ Snake.

    Beyond music, Lil Jon has appeared on television shows, engaged in philanthropy, and even ventured into bodybuilding competitions in recent years.

    Accolades

    Lil Jon won a Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Yeah!” in 2005 and earned multiple Grammy nominations overall.

    He has secured numerous Billboard Music Awards, including recognition as one of the top winners of all time, with eight number-one singles on the Rhythmic chart.

    Additional honors include BMI Songwriter of the Year awards, MTV Video Music Awards, an American Music Award, a BET Award, and Radio Music Awards.
