Kenya: A Safari Tragedy on Mount Ololokwe (August 2026)
One of the most high-profile crashes this year occurred in northern Kenya. On August 19, 2026, an Airbus EC130 B4 helicopter, operated by Lady Lori (Kenya) Limited, crashed on Mount Ololokwe in Samburu County.
The helicopter was on a tourist flight when it struck a rock formation near the summit while flying at a low level. The impact caused it to tumble down a steep slope and over a cliff, where it was destroyed by fire. All seven people on board were killed. Among the victims were the pilot, Josh Outram, and former Ecuadorian Chief of Intelligence, Michele Sensi Contugi, and his wife. A preliminary report indicated the helicopter had impacted rising terrain shortly after taking off from a brief landing due to bad weather.
Greece: Honeymoon Horror on the Island of Sifnos (August 2026)
In a separate tragedy, a private helicopter crashed on the Greek island of Sifnos on August 17, 2026. The aircraft, identified as a Bell 206, crashed and burst into flames as it approached a helipad.
On board were a British newlywed couple, Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert, who were on their honeymoon, and an experienced Greek pilot. All three were killed. Investigators are looking into whether a damaged rotor blade from an earlier incident may have been a contributing factor, and witnesses reported the helicopter appeared to spin out of control before the crash.
Indonesia: A Devastating Crash in Borneo (April 2026)
In April 2026, all eight people on board an Airbus H130 helicopter were killed when it crashed in a remote area of West Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo. The helicopter, operated by PT Matthew Air Nusantara, lost contact just five minutes after taking off from Melawi district. Debris was found the following day, confirming the grim outcome.
Peru: A Military Tragedy During Flood Rescue (February 2026)
A Peruvian Air Force Mi-17 helicopter crashed in the Arequipa region of southern Peru in February 2026, killing all 15 people on board. The victims included four crew members and 11 passengers, among them seven children. The helicopter was involved in a flood rescue operation when it went down in the mountainous terrain near the coastal municipality of Chala.
South Korea: Military Training Accident (February 2026)
In February 2026, a South Korean Army AH-1S Cobra attack helicopter crashed during a training flight in the northern county of Gapyeong. Both crew members on board were killed in the accident.
