At least one person was killed in an accident involving three trailers at a key bridge in Emali area along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
The Friday morning accident caused a serious traffic gridlock between Emali and Masimba along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, police said.
Witnesses said the jam stretched many kilometers.
Police spokesman Michael Muchiri said the accident happened at the Jet Inn area involving three trailers that collided on a railway bridge, completely blocking the road.
Another driver was injured in the accident.
He said police were Friday morning working with relevant agencies to restore normal traffic flow.
“Additional police officers have been deployed to the area and will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules. We urge motorists to exercise patience and maintain lane discipline,” he said.
He also urged motorists to, in the meantime consider alternative routes to ease congestion and enhance safety.
The Mombasa-bound traffic should consider using the Machakos–Wote–Makindu route, while Nairobi-bound traffic can use the Makindu– Wote–Machakos route
He told those not in hurry to be patient and wait as the personnel on the ground work to clear the mess.
Many motorists were stranded on the road for hours following the accident.
The route is key and busy as it connects Mombasa, Nairobi and parts of East Africa at large.
There are plans to expand the road as part of efforts to address such incidents, which disrupt the free flow of goods and services.
The plans have been hindered by among others greed and corruption. Large parts of the road are poor and lead to fatal accidents.
