Police in Mwingi Central Sub-County, Kitui County, are investigating a murder incident that stemmed from an assault during a burial ceremony in Kivou Location.

According to the police, the incident began on May 30, 2026, at around 6:00 p.m. in Katinga Village, when two men reportedly engaged in a physical altercation during the funeral proceedings.

During the confrontation, one of the individuals, allegedly assaulted Elias Muthui Mulatya, a 21-year-old male, on the head using a spade before fleeing the scene.

The matter was initially reported at Thitha Police Post, after which officers referred the victim for urgent medical attention at Mwingi Level IV Hospital while launching a search for the suspect.

On May 31, 2026, officials confirmed that the victim had succumbed to injuries sustained during the assault.

Medical reports from Mwingi Level IV Hospital indicated that the deceased had been admitted with swelling and lacerations on the upper part of the head, accompanied by complaints of severe headache and vomiting. A CT scan conducted later revealed a fractured skull consistent with a blunt force injury.

Police officers visited the hospital and confirmed the death with the attending doctor. The body was moved to the Mwingi Level IV Hospital mortuary for preservation pending a post-mortem examination.

The scene of the incident was processed by investigators, though the suspected murder weapon was not recovered. Authorities confirmed that the suspect, Mutuku Muimi alias Katunga, is still at large, and efforts to trace and arrest him are ongoing.

And police in Mathira East Sub-County, Nyeri County, are investigating a suspected murder following the death of a 73-year-old man who had earlier been treated for injuries after an alleged assault.

The incident was reported on May 31, 2026.

According to police, the deceased, identified as James Kinyua Wahome, a Kikuyu male adult aged 73, is said to have been assaulted during the night at an unknown time by a suspect identified as Patty Ngatia.

The victim was later found lying in a distressed condition at Gikumbo Shopping Centre and was taken to Karatina Level Four Hospital, where he was treated and discharged in stable condition.

Police reports indicate that after being discharged, the deceased was taken back home, where he later requested to rest outside his house within the compound. He was subsequently found dead by family members.

Investigators observed visible injuries on the left side of the deceased’s head, along with blood stains on his clothes and hands, suggesting he may have succumbed to injuries sustained during the earlier assault.

The body was moved to Karatina Level Four Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident and are pursuing the suspect named in connection with the assault.
