A 63-year-old man was shot and killed in a robbery incident at a shop in Kehancha, Migori County.

This is the latest such incident in the area amid protests of rising armed crime in general.

Police said David Masero Sabai was shot in the chest by gunmen who had arrived at a shop and were demanding cash and other valuables.

The incident happened on Monday night as the deceased was waiting to be served at the shop. Two men, one armed with an AK47 rifle and the other with a panga walked there and ordered the attendant and the deceased to lie down. They then demanded cash and other valuables from the two before opening fire and killing Sabai on the spot.

He was shot as he knelt and pleaded with the gang to spare him. The owner of the shop managed to escape in the confusion and because there was a blackout in the area at that time.

Police said the gang escaped the scene without stealing anything.

A team of detectives visited the scene and recovered a spent cartridge of 7.62mm special ammunition.

The body was later moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

Police said a team of detectives had been sent to the area to pursue the murder and others that have been reported. This follows a surge in armed crime in the area.

The gunmen have been targeting businesses at an alarming rate leaving a trail of death, police statistics show.

Meanwhile, a suspect was arrested after he fatally chopped a neighbour’s handin an altercation in Tongaren, Bungoma County.

Police said Yussuf Wanjala, 24 died in hospital after the attack by his neighbour. His wrist had been chopped off in the attack leading to profuse bleeding and death.
