Man swallows poison after summoning sister for meeting in Umoja

A man was found dead in his house hours after he had asked his sister to visit him in Umoja, Nairobi.

The decease identified as Valentine Isayi, 30 had sent his sister a message on the mobile phone requesting a meeting on March 16.

The sister visited on March 17 in the morning only to find the door to the house partially locked from inside.

She told police she sought help to open the door and later found the body of her brother lying on the floor in the sitting room.

A half-full bottle of pesticide was found on the table in the house.

Police suspect he had swallowed the poison that caused his death.

The motive of the incident is yet to be known.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy.

This was one of the suicide incidents reported to police on Monday.

In Kamulu, Nairobi, the body of one James Mwangi, 21 was found in a house after a suicide mission.

The incident happened in Malori area and the victim had used a bedsheet to hang himself in the house.

A suicide note and mobile phone were found at the scene and kept as evidence.

The body was moved to Mama Lucy Hospital morgue awaiting an autopsy.

In Ramasha, Kisii County, one Julius Omosa Monda, 20 died by suicide using a mosquito net.

The body was found hanging on the roof rafters with the net tied around his neck.

The motive of the incident is yet to be known. The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and investigations.

In Mukurweini, Nyeri County, one Anthony Gaitho Maina, was found dead after a suspected suicide incident.

Police said he hanged himself using a shoe race that was found tied around his neck on a macadamia tree in his parents’ farm.

The motive of the incident is yet to be known. The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy, police said.

Suicide cases have been on the rise.

The majority of the victims were male, police reports say.

Police say the trend has been worrying and increasing as up to two cases are reported daily.

The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.
