    Siblings

Marina has three siblings, Marko Stakusic and two unnamed sisters.

Marko, Marina’s older brother, shares her passion for tennis and has pursued a professional career in the sport.

Growing up in a family that values athleticism, Marko has likely been both a source of inspiration and competition for Marina.

As the middle child, she describes herself as calm, which can be an interesting dynamic in a family with multiple siblings.

    Career

Stakusic’s career in professional tennis began when she made her WTA Tour debut in 2022 at the Championnats de Granby, where she won her first match against Jaimee Fourlis but lost to Marta Kostyuk in the second round.

In 2023, she was named to the Canadian Billie Jean King Cup team and made a significant impact by winning three out of four singles matches, including a decisive victory against Martina Trevisan in the finals, helping Canada secure its first title in this competition.

In 2024, Stakusic achieved several milestones. She qualified for her first WTA 500 tournament at the San Diego Open, where she reached the Round of 16 after defeating fellow qualifier Marina Melnikova.

She also made her Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon, although she lost in the first round.

Notably, she won her first WTA 125 title at the Abierto Tampico in Mexico, defeating several higher-ranked players along the way, including a top-20 win against Jelena Ostapenko at the Guadalajara Open, where she reached her first WTA quarterfinal.

Continuing her upward trajectory, Stakusic qualified for the Transylvania Open in early 2025, reaching the second round before being eliminated.

Her performance has seen her rankings improve significantly, breaking into the top 150 by August 2024 and continuing to rise as of early 2025.

    Accolades

Stakusic has already achieved several notable accolades in her young tennis career.

One of her most significant accomplishments came in 2023 when she played a key role in helping Canada win its first-ever Billie Jean King Cup title.

She secured three crucial singles victories during the tournament, including a decisive win over Martina Trevisan in the final against Italy.

In September 2023, Stakusic was named ITF World Tennis Tour Player of the Month after an impressive comeback from a six-month injury hiatus.

During this period, she captured her first professional singles titles at the W25 Valladolid and W60 Berkeley tournaments, compiling an 11-match winning streak and defeating three players ranked within the WTA’s Top 300.

In 2024, Stakusic claimed her first WTA 125 title at the Abierto Tampico in Mexico.

She had an outstanding run in the tournament, defeating several higher-seeded players and securing a dramatic three-set victory in the final against Anna Blinkova.

Stakusic also made her Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon in 2024, marking another important step in her career progression.

Additionally, she participated in high-profile tournaments such as the Canadian Open and the Guadalajara Open.

At the latter event, she recorded one of her most impressive wins to date by defeating world No. 12 Jelena Ostapenko, earning her first top-20 victory and reaching her first WTA quarterfinal.
