A group of mourners stormed the home of a murder suspect and set his house on fire in a drama in Baricho, Kirinyaga County.

The group had earlier on passed by the local Baricho police station and briefly dumped a coffin with the body of a 28-year-old bodaboda rider who had been murdered in the area.

Joseph Nguru Munyaro was allegedly murdered and his body dumped in Kiwe River at Mukithi along the Ndia-Kirinyaga Central constituencies border.

Angry mourners who were going home from Kerugoya mortuary dumped the body at the station and caused a fracas for about two hours.

The mourners accused police of failing to arrest key suspects. They later picked up the body and left. Nguru was a bodaboda rider at Kiaga trading centre in Kirinyaga Central constituency, and his new motorcycle was found at the location where his body was dumped.

Mourners left the station after they addressed the media, went to the suspect’s homestead and set his property on fire.

They also made away with his chicken.

Ndia police boss Jos Mudavadi said police have launched investigations and urged residents to record statements.

Cases of arson by mobs have been on the rise in the area amid efforts to address the menace.

Meanwhile, police in Kithimu village, Embu County are investigating murder after the body of a 70-year-old man was found hanged in his bedroom.

The incident had earlier been reported as a suicide but after a probe, police concluded Joseph Mvungo was murdered.

Police visited the scene and established the man had been hanged on a binding wire on a ceiling frame and had a fresh deep cut on the back of the head.

There was blood on the floor and the bed.

Police said the son and wife of the deceased were arrested for interrogation over the murder.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and investigations after the July 9 incident.
