Another fire has broken out at Mt Kenya Forest, the fourth time this year.

According to media reports, the fire broke on the moorland section of Marania Forest on the eastern side of the mountain, but was contained as of Sunday Morning.

“There were small pockets of fire earlier this morning in the moorland. KWS and KFS teams and other stakeholders responded and managed to put it out,” said the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) Eastern Regional boss Beatrice Mbula.

The cause of the fire is yet to be revealed, and the extend of the damage caused.

“Protecting the mountain is quite technical but we are doing all we can. The fire danger alert will remain in place until we are sure the fires have been stopped completely,” KFS Central Highlands Head of Conservation David Muigai said.

Last month, a five-day inferno at the same region razed down 39 acres (16 hectares).

Before that, another fire outbreak razed over 80,000 hectares of moorland in the same area.

The fire that lasted for more than five days, razed down the better part of Mt Kenya National Park in Tharaka-Nithi county, leading to the death of several animals.

In 2017, another in incident in Aberdares affected more than 17,000 acres of the forest.
