A special police unit is set to be deployed to Trans-Nzoia County to contain rising cases of political violence and criminal gang activity, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced.

Speaking at KAG Mother Church Grounds in Kitalale, Trans-Nzoia County, during an interdenominational church service, the CS said he has agreed with the Inspector General of Police to immediately deploy the unit to decisively deal with criminals who have terrorized residents for far too long.

“I have told the Inspector General of Police to deploy a special team to Trans Nzoia to put an end to gangs that have been terrorizing locals,” the CS stated.

He issued a stern warning to political leaders in the county, and accross the country against financing and abetting criminal gangs, reiterated that the Government will take firm and decisive action against anyone found culpable.

“I am warning local leaders, the vice of recruiting youths, arming them with crude weapons, and intoxicating them to cause violence must stop. Trans Nzoia is too important to be left at the mercy of criminal gangs,” he added.

He was accompanied by Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang, MPs Kakai Bisau (Kiminini), Robert Pukose (Endebess), Lilian Siyoi (Trans Nzoia), Martin Wanyonyi (Webuye East), and Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN-Habitat Susan Nakhumicha, among other leaders.

Elsewhere, Murkomen said the Ministry has made significant gains in securing the country by curbing terrorism, banditry, organised crime, and drug trafficking.

He, however, warned that this progress is threatened by a troubling rise in political violence and goonism instigated by leaders across the political divide.

“As we intensify efforts to hold perpetrators and their enablers accountable, I call on all leaders to firmly distance themselves from these destructive tendencies and commit to issue-based, responsible politics,” the CS said.

He was speaking when he joined leaders and faithful at an interdenominational church service and joint fundraiser in Sirwa, Nandi Hills, Nandi County and fundraiser toward infrastructure development for 26 local churches.

Other leaders present were Nandi County Governor Stephen Sang, Presidential Aide Farouk Kibet, Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang, and MPs Bernard Kitur (Nandi Hills), Julius Melly (Tinderet), Marianne Kitany (Aldai), and Innocent Mugabe (Likuyani), alongside other distinguished leaders.
