Microsoft troubled web-based email service, Hotmail, which was introduced to the world more than a decade and half ago, has been officially retired by the software giant. All the users of the service have been migrated to Outlook.com.

According to Microsoft, the migration to Outlook.Com involved moving more than 150 million gigabits of data. Hotmail email account owners will however be able to keep their old @Hotmail addresses. Microsoft has also announced that all settings on Hotmail mobile and Web apps will automatically be updated.

Through Outlook.Com, Microsoft hopes to fully integrate its mailing service with the newly launched touch-focused Windows 8. Currently outlook.com has more than 400 million users trailing the likes of Yahoo and Google in numbers.
