    Early Life

Sasha Banks was born Mercedes Justine Kaestner-Varnado on January 26, 1992, in Fairfield, California. She grew up in a mixed-ethnicity family and helped care for her autistic brother, which led her family to move frequently during her childhood. They eventually settled in Boston, Massachusetts, where she became deeply involved in the local wrestling scene.

Banks has notable ties to the entertainment industry, as she is a cousin of Snoop Dogg, Brandy Norwood, Ray J, and Daz Dillinger. She attended online school and developed an early fascination with professional wrestling, particularly All Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling, which influenced her in-ring style.

    Independent Wrestling Career

Banks began training in 2008 and made her professional debut in Chaotic Wrestling under the ring name Mercedes KV. Early in her career, she frequently teamed with Nikki Roxx and gradually transitioned into singles competition.

Her breakthrough came when she won the Chaotic Wrestling Women’s Championship, later becoming the longest-reigning champion in the promotion’s history. During this period, she also competed for promotions such as New England Championship Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance, sometimes using the name Miss Mercedes.

By 2012, her success on the independent circuit earned her a tryout with WWE, prompting her to leave the independents behind in pursuit of a bigger platform.

    WWE and NXT Rise (2012–2015)

In 2012, Mercedes Kaestner-Varnado signed with WWE and adopted the ring name Sasha Banks. She was assigned to WWE’s developmental brand NXT, where she made her televised debut later that year.

Banks steadily rose through the ranks and became a central figure in NXT’s women’s division. Her rivalry with Charlotte Flair culminated in a historic match at NXT TakeOver: Rival, where Banks captured the NXT Women’s Championship. She held the title for 192 days, successfully defending it against multiple challengers.

In 2015, Banks made history as part of the first women’s match to headline an NXT TakeOver, which also became the longest women’s match and the first Iron Woman match in WWE history. The bout was named Match of the Year by Pro Wrestling Illustrated, which also honored Banks as Woman of the Year.

WWE Main Roster Success and Championships

Following her success in NXT, Sasha Banks joined WWE’s main roster on Raw. In 2016, she defeated Charlotte Flair to win the WWE Women’s Championship, later renamed the Raw Women’s Championship. Over the course of her WWE career, Banks became a five-time Raw Women’s Champion.

She continued breaking barriers by headlining WWE pay-per-view events, becoming the first woman to compete in a Hell in a Cell match, and winning PWI Feud of the Year, another first for a female wrestler.

In 2019, Banks teamed with Bayley to win the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship. She followed this success by capturing the SmackDown Women’s Championship in 2020 at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view.

That same year, Sports Illustrated named her Wrestler of the Year, highlighting her influence across the industry. In 2021, she was among the most-discussed athletes on social media, ranking just behind Simone Biles and LeBron James in total mentions.
