Sophie Ecclestone is an English professional cricketer born on 6 May 1999 in Chester, Cheshire, and raised in the nearby village of Helsby.
Known for her accuracy, control, height-generated bounce, and effective arm ball, she has represented England across all formats since her teenage years.
She also plays domestically for Lancashire and North West Thunder, and has featured in franchise competitions for teams including Manchester Originals in The Hundred, Sydney Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League, and UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League.
Ecclestone grew up immersed in sport, often playing cricket and football daily with family members outside their home, and developed her skills at the local Alvanley Cricket Club, where she was the only girl on the pathway for a time.
Siblings
Sophie has one sibling, an elder brother named James Ecclestone.
James played a pivotal role in her early development, teaching her both cricket and football as they played together extensively in their childhood.
The siblings trained and competed at Alvanley Cricket Club in Helsby, where their father, Paul, served as junior coordinator.
When Sophie made her debut for the Alvanley boys’ first team, James was among her teammates.
He has remained involved with the club, featuring in the side that reached the final of the National Village Cup at Lord’s in 2021.
Career
Ecclestone’s cricket journey began at Alvanley Cricket Club, which she joined at around age seven.
She progressed rapidly through Cheshire’s age-group teams, entering the under-13 pathway by age nine and making her senior debut for Cheshire in the Women’s County Championship in 2013 at just 13 or 14.

In 2015 she signed with Lancashire, making her top-level domestic debut as a 16-year-old.
She went on to feature for Lancashire Thunder in the Kia Super League and later for North West Thunder and Manchester Originals.
Her international career started remarkably early.
She made her Women’s Twenty20 International debut for England against Pakistan on 3 July 2016 at the age of 17, followed by her One Day International debut against the West Indies later that year, and her Test debut against Australia in the Women’s Ashes in November 2017 at Sydney, where her first wicket was Alyssa Healy.
Ecclestone quickly established herself as England’s primary spinner.
She was part of strong tournament campaigns, including finishing as the leading wicket-taker at the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup with 21 wickets, highlighted by figures of 6 for 36 in the semi-final against South Africa.
She also performed strongly at the T20 World Cups in 2020 and 2023.
Domestically and in overseas leagues she has delivered consistent performances, including notable hauls for UP Warriorz in the inaugural Women’s Premier League and for Sydney Sixers in the WBBL.
By the mid-2020s she had accumulated hundreds of international wickets and remained a central figure in England’s bowling attack across formats.
Accolades
In December 2018 the International Cricket Council named Ecclestone the Emerging Player of the Year.
Following strong performances at the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup she rose to become the world’s number-one ranked bowler in Women’s T20 Internationals, achieving the milestone at a young age and becoming the youngest woman to take 50 wickets in the format.
She was named ICC Women’s Player of the Month for June 2021 and has been selected in multiple ICC ODI and T20I Teams of the Year.
In 2025 she was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year.
Additional recognition includes the Women’s Cricket Award at the 2024 Cricket Writers’ Club Awards and PCA Women’s Player of the Year awards.
She has held the number-one ranking in both T20I and ODI bowling at various points and holds records such as England’s leading T20I wicket-taker.
