Teun has a younger brother named Peer Koopmeiners, born on 4 May 2000.

Peer is also a professional midfielder who has spent the bulk of his career at AZ Alkmaar, the same club where both brothers developed as youth players.

Peer has spoken publicly about supporting Teun through challenging periods, including the protracted transfer negotiations that took Teun to Juventus, and the brothers have faced each other on the pitch in professional matches.

    Career

Koopmeiners began his youth career at local side Vitesse ’22 before joining AZ Alkmaar’s academy in 2009. He progressed through the ranks and made his professional debut for AZ in the 2017–18 season.

Over the following years he became a key figure and eventual captain at the club, contributing significantly in the Eredivisie and European competitions.

His standout 2020–21 campaign, in which he scored 15 league goals, highlighted his development into a goal-scoring midfielder.

In August 2021 he transferred to Atalanta in Serie A.

Across three seasons in Bergamo he established himself as a consistent performer, notably scoring a hat-trick against Torino and delivering strong goal and assist tallies, including double-digit goals in consecutive campaigns.

In the 2023–24 season he played a prominent role as Atalanta won the UEFA Europa League, starting in the final victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

On 28 August 2024, Koopmeiners moved to Juventus in a high-value transfer, signing a long-term contract.

He has since featured regularly for the Bianconeri in Serie A and the Champions League while continuing to earn call-ups to the Netherlands senior team, for whom he has appeared at the FIFA World Cup and other major tournaments.

    Accolades

Koopmeiners’ major team honour came with Atalanta’s 2023–24 UEFA Europa League triumph. He was also a KNVB Cup runner-up with AZ in 2017–18 and a Coppa Italia runner-up with Atalanta in 2023–24.

On an individual level he earned recognition including a place in the UEFA Europa League Team of the Season for 2023–24, selection in the Serie A Team of the Year for the same season, and Atalanta’s Goal of the Season award in 2022–23.

With Jong AZ he contributed to a Tweede Divisie title earlier in his career.

At international level he has represented the Netherlands at senior level in World Cups and other competitions, adding to his earlier youth international experience.
