The Pogues drummer Andrew Ranken has died aged 72, the band has announced.

Ranken was a founding member of the London-based music group and played in some of the band’s best-known songs such as Fairytale of New York and Dirty Old Town.

In a statement published online the band said Ranken, who died on Tuesday, was the “heartbeat of The Pogues”.

“Andrew, thank you for everything, for your friendship, your wit and your generosity of spirit, and of course for the music, forever a true friend and brother,” the statement reads.

Nicknamed “The Clobberer”, Ranken played drums, percussion, harmonica and provided vocals for The Pogues in the 90s and 00s.

Formed in 1982, the band’s most iconic lineupincluded late singer Shane MacGowan, bassist Cait O’Riordan, singer and tin whistle player Spider Stacy, banjo player Jem Finer, accordion player James Fearnley and Ranken.
