    Tony Curtis was born Bernard Schwartz on June 3, 1925, in New York City to Hungarian-Jewish immigrant parents.

    His childhood was marked by hardship. Growing up in poverty, Curtis spent time in an orphanage with one of his brothers after his parents struggled financially.

    Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Curtis enlisted in the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Proteus during World War II.

    After his military service, he attended the City College of New York under the GI Bill before studying acting at the New School in Greenwich Village.

    Acting Career

    Curtis moved to Hollywood in the late 1940s after signing with Universal Pictures, where he changed his name from Bernard Schwartz to Anthony Curtis.

    After appearing in several small film roles, he landed his first starring role in “The Prince Who Was a Thief” (1951). His popularity continued to grow with films including “Houdini,” “Trapeze,” and “Sweet Smell of Success.”

    His performance in “The Defiant Ones” earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, cementing his reputation as one of Hollywood’s finest performers.

    Curtis continued starring in successful films throughout the 1960s, including “Spartacus,” “Taras Bulba,” “The Great Race,” and “The Boston Strangler,” which marked a return to dramatic acting after several years in comedy.

    Although his film output slowed during the later stages of his career, Curtis continued working in movies and television for decades.

    Tony Curtis died on September 29, 2010, at the age of 85 after suffering cardiac arrest at his home.

    In the years leading up to his death, he faced several health challenges, including heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and complications related to asthma.
