Two dead as MPs Sunkuli, Barongo move to stem escalation of Kisii-Transmara border violence

At least two people were confirmed killed in the ongoing violent skirmishes at the restive Kiango border point at the Kisii-Transmara border.

MPs Julius Sunkuli (Transmara West) said he had been briefed of two deaths so far.

The MP and his Bomachoge Borabu counterpart Obadiah Barongo also convened separate barazas to preach peace to avert more possible blood shed.

Speaking in Kilgoris, Sunkuli said the two fatalities were from his constituency.

They succumbed as they were being attended to for arrow injuries at separate health facilities in Kilgoris Town.

One was shot Saturday and the other Sunday as violence engulfed the sprawling fields in Kiango.

At least six youth from Bomachoge sustained arrow injuries.

Four were still by Monday being attended to at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, officials said.

Two others were, however, treated Saturday and discharged from a hospital in Magena in Kisii County.

The skirmishes broke out early Saturday following a cattle theft incident at Kiango homestead, a key flashpoint of tribal skirmishes.

Youth keeping pursuit of the thugs reported running into hostile gangs inside Transmara villages sparking a confrontation that has spilled violence into the villages neighbouring the communal border.

On Monday, at least one sugarcane farm was torched by goons as talks went on.

Both legislators, however, condemned the violence.

They said there was no need for a build up of animosity as the two communities have coexisted peacefully for years.

“We depend on each other as a people and i have told our youth. It is sheer reckless to kill each other over things we can solve through dialogue,” Sunkuli told journalists Kilgoris town amid tensions.

At Kiango , MP Barongo said he had already urged the youth to lay down their crude weapons and give peace a chance.

“We have already been told that the elders from Transmara have resolved to follow the matter up and ensure the three stolen cows are returned by Friday. We are looking forward to it and i ask our people to keep peace,” he stated.

The area is experiencing a new wave of cattle rustling incidents which have sparked the inter clan fighting.

There had been a lull on the same for some time due to measures put in place.

Police said they had deployed more personnel to help in managing the crisis.
