The United States of America is trying to initiate dialogue that will perhaps end the political stalemate that has rocked the country for the past four months.

During a meeting at Robert Godec’s residence, US ambassador to Kenya, Donald Yamamoto, Principal Deputy assistant Secretary at the US government’s Bureau of African Affairs is said to have warned individuals who are against dialogue of sanctions from President Donald Trump’s administration.

Mr Yamamoto, according to Nation spoke during a meeting attended last night (December 5) by key opposition leaders; Moses Wetangula, Raila Odinga, Musalia Mudavadi and sitting in for Kalonzo Musyoka was Governor Kivutha Kibwana.

He is also said to meet Jubilee today (Wednesday, December 6) to bring them to the negotiating table.

But President Uhuru Kenyatta had earlier insisted that the opposition should first exhaust all the constitutional means as is provided by law before dialogue.

The head of state maintains that the politicking period is over and it is time to build the nation.

NASA on the other hand says that he (Uhuru) is not the duly elected president and his government ‘illegitimate.’

During the Tuesday night meeting, opposition leaders stated that they were ready to talk about electoral reforms that must lead to another election being held in the near future.

Kenyatta was sworn in for his second term in office on November 28, after his August 8 win was nullified by the Supreme Court. The former Prime Minister pulled out of the race saying that it was not a level playing field.

The U.S also cautioned the opposition against swearing in Odinga on December 12 as the move would further disunite the country.

Attorney General Githu Muigai has said that the former Prime Minister will be punished should his party swear him in.

Raila, he said, will be violating Constitution Article 3(2), which states that ‘any attempt to establish a government otherwise than in the compliance with this constitution is unlawful.’
