Security agencies in Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County, yesterday received 41 illegally-held firearms and rounds of ammunition voluntarily surrendered by local residents.

Police described the move as a major milestone in the ongoing disarmament campaign aimed at restoring peace and security in the Kerio Valley region. The firearms have since been secured pending further administrative action.

“The National Police Service commends the individuals for heeding the call to surrender illegal weapons and urges others still in possession of such arms to follow suit,” police said in a statement.

The Service also appealed to the public to continue working closely with security agencies by sharing information on suspicious activities through the nearest police station.

Elsewhere in West Pokot County, security officers recovered an illegal firearm following its voluntary surrender by a resident of Rorok Village, Kositot Sub-Location. The weapon, an AK-47 rifle with a magazine containing five rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, was handed over to authorities through the Assistant County Commissioner Chesegon Division and the area Assistant Chief.

Police applauded the move, terming it a positive step towards eliminating illegal arms and fostering lasting peace in the region.

Earlier this week, security agencies in Kerio Valley also received 10 illegal firearms, rounds of ammunition, and a cleaning kit from residents who voluntarily surrendered them.

Authorities say the voluntary handover of weapons is a significant boost to the ongoing disarmament efforts meant to enhance peace and security in communities often affected by banditry and inter-communal conflict.
