    Early Life

Yves Saint Laurent was born on August 1, 1936, in Oran, French Algeria, to Lucienne and Charles Saint Laurent. He grew up with two younger sisters, Michèle and Brigitte, in a Mediterranean villa. From a young age, Yves showed a talent for fashion, designing paper dolls and dresses for his family. At 17, he moved to Paris and enrolled at the prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, where his designs quickly attracted attention and led to his introduction to Christian Dior.

    House of Dior

After graduating, Saint Laurent joined Christian Dior as an assistant. By 1957, Dior selected him as his successor, but shortly thereafter, Dior passed away unexpectedly. At just 21 years old, Saint Laurent became head designer at the House of Dior. His first collection, the Trapeze Line (Spring 1958), saved the company from financial trouble and catapulted him to international fame.

In 1960, his career faced a major setback when he was drafted into the French Army during the Algerian War. After only 20 days, stress from fellow soldiers led to hospitalization, where he endured psychoactive drugs and electroshock therapy, and he was ultimately fired from Dior.

    Yves Saint Laurent (YSL)

After recovering, Yves partnered with his lifelong partner, industrialist Pierre Bergé, to launch the luxury fashion house Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) in 1962. YSL quickly became a powerhouse in the fashion world, known for:

    • Introducing Le Smoking tuxedo suit for women
    • Launching ready-to-wear couture lines
    • Popularizing bold trends like beatnik styles, safari jackets, tight trousers, and thigh-high boots
    • Pioneering the broad, shoulder-padded look of the 1980s

Saint Laurent also designed costumes for Catherine Deneuve in films such as Heartbeat and Mississippi Mermaid, and she was the first customer at his Rive Gauche store in Paris.

    Business and Estate

In 1999, Yves Saint Laurent sold his company to the Gucci Group (now Kering) for over $1 billion, making him one of the wealthiest designers in the world. He continued as creative director until retiring in 2002.

Following his death, YSL’s estate sale in 2009 at Christie’s Paris featured over 700 lots of artwork, furniture, and collectibles amassed with Bergé, raising more than $480 million. Notable pieces included a Mondrian painting for $27 million and a Tutankhamun bust for $5 million.

    Personal Life

Openly gay, Yves Saint Laurent shared both his life and work with Pierre Bergé. The couple owned multiple properties, including the neo-Gothic Château Gabriel in Benerville-sur-Mer, decorated with themes inspired by Marcel Proust, and a villa in Marrakech, Morocco.

Saint Laurent struggled with alcohol and substance abuse in the 1960s and 70s, frequenting Paris and New York nightlife, including Studio 54, but maintained a lifelong devotion to fashion and creativity.

    Death

Yves Saint Laurent passed away on June 1, 2008, at his Paris home from brain cancer at age 71. His ashes were scattered around his Marrakech villa.
