Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday held talks with George Natembeya in Nairobi as opposition leaders prepare for a tour of the Western Kenya region scheduled to begin on Friday, June 12.

In a statement, Gachagua said the meeting focused on the upcoming three-day tour by the United Alternative Government coalition and efforts to mobilise support across the region.

According to Gachagua, Governor Natembeya briefed him on the commitment of residents of Western Kenya to join other Kenyans in pushing for political change ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“I am very happy that Governor Natembeya, just like me and colleagues in the United Alternative Government, is clear that the only way to liberate our country is to identify one presidential candidate to face President William Ruto on August 10, 2027,” Gachagua said.

The meeting comes days after the High Court upheld Gachagua’s impeachment as Deputy President, although the court awarded him Sh50 million in damages after finding that his right to a fair hearing had been violated during Senate proceedings.

Following the ruling, Gachagua announced that he would challenge the decision at the Court of Appeal, maintaining that the impeachment process was flawed.

The former Deputy President also disclosed plans to take a 45-day political break after completing the Western Kenya tour. During the period, he said he would engage stakeholders at his Wamunyoro residence to build consensus on a preferred presidential candidate for the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 polls.

“I have briefed him on my 45-day stakeholder engagement at my Wamunyoro residence to build consensus with my support base on the identification of a single presidential candidate for the United Alternative Government. This is as espoused in our party, DCP Party, philosophy of listening to the people,” Gachagua stated.

He added that Natembeya had indicated similar discussions were taking place across Western Kenya, with many residents expressing a desire for political change.

The opposition tour of Western Kenya comes as political activities continue to intensify ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Meanwhile, the Linda Mwananchi movement is also expected to hold political engagements in Thika this weekend as leaders continue to rally support across different regions of the country.
