The director of public prosecution Noordin Haji while appearing on the Jeff Koinange Live TV show said that his office had changed tact on how to deal with corruption matters.

He said that they were not only seeking a conviction but also sought to recover the proceeds of corruption to Kenyans.

“I’m not justifying the stealing but, even when they do it, the money is not properly utilized. In some of the cases we’re trying to recover but there isn’t much to recover because they wasted it in ventures that are not viable,” said the DPP.

Haji also spoke on the dam issue clarifying that all dams that were to be constructed were under investigation. He said in the Arror and Kamwerer dams a total of Sh7 billion had been paid out to the contractor and a further Sh11 billion had been paid to the insurer but the construction of the dams was yet to commence.

The DPP refuted claims that his investigation was tribal giving statistics of the people from various tribes that were under investigation on corruption matters.

According to the DPP’s statistics 141 people from the Kikuyu tribe were facing corruption charges, 56 Kalenjin, 29 Luhyas, 34 Kamba, 15 Indians and 16 Somalis.

“We’re not targeting any individual. We have cases and we have the evidence and we’ll put it before the court of law and they will decide. We have not in any way weaponized the war against corruption,” he said.

“What we’re saying is that whether you’re Kikuyu or Kalenjin or Somali, you’re a criminal. What you’ve done is you’ve stolen from Kenyans and you must face the law to it’s full extent.”

He also added that the Banks aiding corruption would also be charged.

“We will charge them. We will be charging some of the banks very soon,” he said.

The tough talking DPP maintained that his office was working on procedures to make bail and bond terms to commensurate the amount of money that the person has lost.

He said that he was only accountable to Kenyans and no one else and that he was working only to Kenyans.
