The Ministry of Education has declared closure of schools both private and public that haven’t met the required standards by mid-June.

Speaking in parliament, Education PS Belio Kipsang stated that students of those schools that will be closed down will consequently be placed in other schools at the beginning of the third term.

His announcement follows CS George Magoha’s directive to put on hold any setting up of new public universities.

Addressing a forum on University Education, Magoha noted that it is important to stop the opening of too many universities teaching the same thing.

“Why do you have to duplicate courses? Where this university is doing law, the other is doing the same. We cannot establish new universities that will only duplicate courses offered in existing ones. I have received requests to increase the number of universities… you must apply the breaks,” he said.

Magoha further noted that there already exists too many institutions which are not sustainable.

He said that the government will not support such projects any longer.

Last month Prof Magoha raised alarm over irrelevant university courses offered prompting the ministry to order for the review of the university curriculum to do away with such courses, adding that universities must be market oriented.

“I might be forced to shut some public universities this year and send some lecturers home. We cannot continue having irrelevant courses in our institutions that no single student has chosen for years,” said Magoha.
