Adam Pelech is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Born on August 16, 1994, in Toronto, Ontario, he stands 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs around 210-212 pounds.

Pelech shoots left and has developed into one of the league’s most reliable shutdown defensemen, known for his strong defensive play, physical presence, penalty-killing abilities, and ability to log heavy minutes.

Drafted by the Islanders in the third round (65th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, he has spent his entire professional career with the organization, becoming a key part of their blue line.

    Siblings

Adam has two older brothers, Matthew and Michael Pelech.

Both brothers played professional hockey and served as significant role models for Adam during his youth.

Matt was a first-round pick by the Calgary Flames in the 2005 NHL Draft and played briefly in the NHL, while Mike also pursued a professional career.

The brothers grew up in a hockey-centric family in Toronto, with Adam following in their footsteps through minor hockey with the Toronto Marlboros.

    Career

Pelech was drafted by the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and had a standout junior career.

In 2011-12, he earned the Ivan Tennant Memorial Award (for academic excellence) and the Bobby Smith Trophy (as OHL Scholastic Player of the Year), becoming the first player in Otters history to achieve such honors while also representing Canada internationally.

He continued to progress, posting strong offensive numbers as a defenseman in his later OHL seasons.

After signing his entry-level contract with the Islanders in 2014, Pelech spent time developing with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

He made his NHL debut in the 2015-16 season and gradually earned a full-time role.

Early career challenges included injuries, such as thoracic outlet syndrome, but he established himself as a steady, stay-at-home defenseman under coaches like Barry Trotz.

Paired often with Ryan Pulock, Pelech excelled in defensive and shutdown roles while contributing offensively at times.

He signed a significant eight-year, $46 million extension in 2021, reflecting his importance to the franchise.

Over more than 640 NHL games, Pelech has recorded around 30 goals and 147 assists.

He has been a consistent presence on the Islanders’ blue line through playoff runs, including deep postseason appearances in 2019-20, and has adapted to various team systems.

Despite occasional injury setbacks, he has remained a durable and trusted veteran defenseman into the 2025-26 season.

    Accolades

Pelech’s honors include multiple OHL recognitions, such as the Bobby Smith Trophy (2012), Ivan Tennant Memorial Award (2012), OHL Second All-Star Team (2014), and participation in the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.

Internationally, he helped Canada win gold at the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and bronze at the 2012 IIHF World U18 Championships.

In the NHL, he was selected to the 2022 NHL All-Star Game, marking a highlight of his career.

He has earned praise for his defensive reliability, including strong plus-minus ratings in key seasons and votes for the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman.
